* American Art Union.  "BULLETIN OF THE AMERICAN ART UNION - 1851".  New
York; American Art Union: 1851.  The old American Art Union was an
interesting organization: it fostered artists and helped establish the
fine arts in this country at a time when they needed all the help they
could get.  That it did this in large part by purchasing paintings from
artists to be distributed to paying members by lot was merely a trend of
the times -many early American industries obtained their initial financing
by lotteries and other such devices.  For those who had the luxury of
waiting, the price of a subscription wasn't a bad investment- among those
whose paintings were distributed were George Caleb Bingham, Jasper
Cropsey, Asher B. Durand and Frederick Church.  The "Bulletin" affords an
interesting glimpse inside the American art "scene" at mid century.
Hardcover. 8.5"x11.5", 154 + vi + 8 pages, engraved and etched plates and
illustrations in the text; bound in old quarter leather.  Hardcover.  Some
cover wear and soil and some internal soil, age-toning, foxing and
moderate dampstains.   [00145]  $300.00

* "HANDBOOK OF YOUNG ARTISTS AND AMATEURS IN OIL PAINTING...BY AN AMERICAN
ARTIST". New York; Wiley and Putnam:1845. First edition of this popular
19th century manual, based in large part upon Bouvier, Merimee and de
Montabert. The author discusses materials and implements, coloring,
finishing, the technique of painting drapery, painting landscapes, and
finally varnishing, cleaning, repairing and lining. A source of much
useful information on 19th century techniques and materials, and also of
interest as an influential American manual. Hardcover. 5"x8", xxxiii +
398 pages, plus 7 page catalog of Wiley and Putnam books at the rear.
Original cloth, covers soiled and worn, contents spotted and shaken. Not
the best copy we have ever had by a long shot, but all original and
useful. [29169]  $125.00

* Simpson, Corelli C.W. "LEAFLETS OF ARTISTS". Bangor; John H. Bacon:1893.
A scarce little compilation of short essays about late 19th century
Bangor, Maine-area artists. The biographies are anecdotal in tone and
scope, having mainly been written by friends or relatives of the artists.
The artists themselves were minor regional figures at best, but this
little study provides an interesting snapshot of the artistic life of a
small New England community in the Victorian period.  Hardcover.
5.5"x7", 59 pages, portrait frontispiece; light cover soil. [21503]
$100.00

* Simpson, Corelli C.W. "LEAFLETS OF ARTISTS". Bangor;John H. Bacon:1894.
The expanded 1894 edition.  Although OCLC locates 17 copies of the 1893
first edition, no copies of this expanded edition are located.
Hardcover.  5.5"x7", 77 pages, portrait frontispiece; light cover soil.
[21504] $150.00
