Written by Order of King Alfonso the Sage, in the Year 1283. Manuscript in 
the Royal Library of the Escorial (j.T. 6 fol.). Complete Reproduction in 194 
Phototypic Plates. Leipzig: Karl W. Hiersemann. 1913. 2 vols. Large folio (19” 
tall). ff.(5),96;(2),(97)-194. Preliminary text (by John G. White) and 
title-pages in English & Spanish. Orig. green calf over heavy boards, spines a bit 
rubbed.     $2,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
Very scarce and important facsimile. This manuscript is “the most important 
book on games which has descended to us from the Middle Ages” (preface). It is 
also the most important early illuminated manuscript (well over 100 large 
illuminations of chess play and the players) on chess, here reproduced entirely 
for the first (and only?) time. The N.U.C. only records 1 copy. The set weighs 
31 lbs!
