[EMBLEM BOOK] [CATZII, IACOBI (CATS, JACOB)]. [PROTEUS OFTE
MINNE-BEELDEN....]. [Rotterdam]: [Pieter van Waesberge] [1627]. First
Edition. Quarto (6-3/4" x 9-1/4") bound in contemporary vellum
consisting of five parts bound together as issued. An incomplete copy
lacking the general title page and frontispiece as well as four other
leaves (C2, G1, S2, and Y4) in Part I and three leaves in Part III
(Ddd3, Fff4, and Hhh3). All told this has 47 (of 52) nearly full-page
engravings in Part I, which is a revised edition of SILENUS
ALCIBIADIS, and 41 (of 44) engravings in Part III (the inserted plate
is present). There are also 4 copperplates and a folding portrait (of
2) in Part V. Part II and Part IV, both unillustrated,are present as
is the Argumentum apparently not found in all copies. Laudatory poems
in various languages including Latin, Dutch, French, and even English,
which appears in this edition only, the only edition in quarto.
Landwehr, Low Countries 92. It is not unusual for copies of this book
to be lacking leaves or to have the parts bound in a different order.
Good, incomplete copy, still with most of the fine engravings. $750
