"COLLECTION DE M. le COMTE ARMAND DORIA". Paris; Georges Petit: May 4-5th
and 8-9th, 1899. Deluxe edition of 200 numbered copies printed on papier
verge a la forme.

An absolutely magnificent auction catalog, complete with 72 pages of
prefatory material on the Count and his Collection by L. Roger-Miles and
Arsene Alexandre. The modern artists represented are largely French, and
although a large portion of the collection is devoted to Corot, there are
also fine works by Degas, Manet, Daumier, some nice Renoirs including "La
Pensee", "Jeune Femme" and "Cafe-Concert" (now in the National Gallery as
"La Première Sortie" (all 3 illustrated); the second volume contains
watercolors, pastels and bronzes.

Card covers. 2 volumes. 11"x14.5", lxxii + 174 + 178 pages; 682 lots; plus
many b/w plates with tissue guards. Original card covers with colored
coats of arms; covers scuffed and soiled; some cover chipping on the
spines; the spine of Volume 1 (a thick, heavy volume) has split internally
and is very fragile. Endpapers with some spotting and discoloration; there
is some toning to the page edges and a little internal spotting, but
overall a very attractive set internally. If the set is to be used in any
manner it should be bound into hardcovers with the original card covers
preserved, as a set this heavy was never meant to be bound in softcovers
for any length of time. [00815] $300.00
