[Fulton Lawsuits] Report [of the] Committee of Claims, to whom were
referred the memorial of the heirs of Robert Fulton... Washington; March
10th, 1840 and April 12th, 1842.

Two documents in the contentious battle Fulton's children waged to get
compensation from the government for what was (or was not) owed their
father at his death in 1815. Fulton, a painter, inventor and tinkerer, had
been at work on steam frigates for the Navy, and had also had his vessel
"Vesuvius" taken by the government for the defense of New Orleans during
the War of 1812. The heirs were claiming compensation, and between 1820
and 1840 a variety of Congressional Committees had been in favor of paying
them anywhere between $20,000 and $100,000, but the bills had never passed
the full Congress.

The 1840 report included here was actually the first time that a
Congressional committee concluded that the heirs were not entitled to a
single penny from the government. That did not stop the proceedings,
though, and the 1842 report reverses this; in 1846 the surviving heirs
would eventually receive about $76,000. Both these reports include much
documentation of the dispute from earlier years. Disbound. 6"x9", 19 & 40
pages, removed from a larger compilation. [05117] $50.00
