Steel, John H. AN ANALYSIS OF THE MINERAL WATERS OF SARATOGA AND BALLSTON,
with practical remarks on their Medical Properties; together with a
history of the discovery and settlement of these celebrated Watering
Places, and observations on the Geology and Mineralogy of the surrounding
country.

Saratoga Springs; G.M. Davison: 1831.

An "entire new work"; the author had published a previous book on the
subject in 1817, but notes that in light of recent research by others "it
became necessary that a more careful and accurate investigation of the
properties of these waters should be made".

Steel describes the history of the areas springs and spas, and analyzes in
great detail the geology of the area, and the mineral and gaseous contents
of the waters. He then describes the various commercial springs and spas,
and ends by commenting a some length on the medicinal properties of the
various waters and their uses. This last part is not mere puffery, as Dr.
Steel had spent twenty years at the springs treating cases and comments on
instances where the waters can do much more harm than good. One
particularly interesting section describes the recent discovery and nature
of iodine, and comments on its presence in some of the waters and the good
effects on patients. A very interesting study.

Hardcover. 4.5"x7", 203 pages, moderate foxing throughout. Bound in
period, or nearly period, marbled boards with a leather spine and gilt
title. Some wear to the boards and moderate wear to the spine. [05114]
