We are pleased to offer:

1. [Connecticut] ACTS AND LAWS, MADE AND PASSED BY THE GENERAL
COURT OR ASSEMBLY OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE STATE OF
CONNECTICUT, IN AMERICA; HOLDEN AT HARTFORD, IN SAID STATE, ON THE
SECOND THURSDAY OF MAY...1779. 1779. Printed by Timothy Green,
printer to the Governor and Company. New London. p. 517-536.
String tied. The final six (of ten) leaves are printed on blue/gray
paper. A few old ink notations. Very good.

A group of acts and laws passed in Connecticut in the midst of the
Revolutionary War. The first five pages of the Acts are devoted to
"Directions of Listers," which specifies the basis for poll and estate
taxes (e.g., oxen valued at 4 pounds; boggy meadow, mowed, at 5
shillings per acre; etc.) Another act is for "regulating the choice of
delegates to represent this State in the Congress of the United
States." "An Act to prevent Sharping and Engrossing" was aimed at
eliminating profiteering by those "taking Occasion of the present
calamitous War." Other acts dealt with regulating the militia, placing
embargoes, and preventing dueling. Good insight into the realities of
war-time America. Evans, American Bibliography: 16233. [Item no.
2584.] $250.00.

2. [Vermont.] Chipman, Nathaniel. REPORTS AND DISSERTATIONS, IN
TWO PARTS. PART I. REPORTS OF CASES DETERMINED IN THE SUPREME COURT OF
THE STATE OF VERMONT, IN THE YEARS 1789, 1790, AND 1791... 1793.
Printed by Anthony Haswell, for the author. Rutland. Early calf
binding: scratched, stained and bumped. Hinges cracked. Remnants of
black spine label. Owners' names on endpapers and title page. Text
block generally very good.

Chipman, a Yale-educated lawyer, was prominent in both the judicial and
legislative affairs of Vermont in the post-Revolutionary War period. He
served in the Vermont legislature as well as the U.S. Senate. His
judicial service included Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court and
the first U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Vermont. Based
on a review of McCorison, this appears to be the first publication of
Vermont case reports. Evans, American Bibliography: 25296. Sabin, A
Dictionary of Books Relating to America: 99132. McCorison: Vermont
Imprints 1778-1820: 256. Cohen: Bibliography of Early American Law:
5384. [Item no. 2568.] $750.00.
