3.	SIMPSON,THOMAS. THE NATURE AND LAWS OF CHANCE : containing, among other
particulars, the solutions of several abstruse and important problems, the
doctrine of combinations and permutations clearly deduced, a new and
comprehensive problem of great use in discovering the advantage or loss in
lotteries, raffles, etc... Printed for F. Wingrave, Seccessor to Mr.
Nourse, in the Strand, MDCCXCII. Second edition. [The first was issued in
London in 1740]. [2],iv,95,[3]p. : ill. ; 8º. With a final advertisement
leaf. Thomas Simpson (1710-1761) both built on the work of one of the
leading mathematicians of his day, Abraham de Moivre (1667-1754), and
attempted to surpass it. The second, significantly expanded version of de
Moivre's Doctrine of Chances had appeared in 1738. In The Nature and Laws
of Chance Simpson wrote approvingly of De Moivre, but claimed to have
investigated two problems in probability for which the latter had given
only the results. The result was a feud between the two
mathematicians, intensified by Simpson's publication of Annuities and
Reversions (1742), which suggested some improvements on De Moivre's
Annuities on Lives (1728). De Moivre accused Simpson of borrowing from De
Moivre's own mathematical work. This controversy over Simpson's originality
is an issue to this day, with De Morgan admiring and Pearson (History of
Statistics in the 17th and 18th Centuries) much less so, though
acknowledging Simpson's contributions as a writer of mathematical texts and
originator of formulae in trigonometry and astronomy. This is, of course
after DeMoivre's publications of 1718 and 38, the third publication on the
use of mathematical probability in gambling in the English language, here
in second edition. ESTC, T77357; OCLC: 2218451; 14 Locs. in the USA, [ NYP,
