Second edition of the first English legal treatise, believed to
have been written between 1187 and 1189, and for which Maitland
reserved the highest of praise, calling it "a venerated authority
among English lawyers [and] of great value".

2.  [MARTINDALE-HUBBELL].  The National Legal Directory, Embracing
the Names of One or More of the Leading and Most Reliable Attorneys

A rare precursor of, and the real basis for, the first
Martindale-Hubbell directory, later published under Hubbell's own
name and then combined with and absorbed by Martindale's directory;
three copies in OCLC (one in a law library) and two in RLIN.

A rare, almost half-century run of Old Bailey prisoners' monthly
calendars, an estimated 50,000 accused, providing their names,
ages, occupations, and the crimes charged, described with
specificity; in no source consulted, including RLIN & OCLC.

4.  PARSONS, Theophilus.  The Elements of Mercantile Law. Cohen

First edition of one of the major works of the Dane Professor of
Law at Harvard whom Holmes described as "gifted with a power of
impressive statement which I do not know that I have ever seen
equalled"; with chapters on shipping and marine insurance.

First edition in English of Pufendorf's most important work, in his
quest as the "architect and systematizer of the modern natural law
tradition", its translation "extremely smooth and readable" and
forming in part the basis for modern scholarship.

The last early edition of one of Pufendorf's principal works, of
sufficient importance to appear in the Carnegie Endowment's
"Classics of International Law", exploring Pufendorf's conception
of natural law; with the frontispiece portrait.

The principal printed source of Romilly's life, comprised of three
major parts, including selections from his correspondence and his
Parliamentary diary, the latter of which bears directly upon
Romilly's extraordinary reform efforts.

Still the only edition of Selden's works, a fit tribute to the man
whose name Maitland chose to grace the Selden Society and whose
output (in Holdsworth's words) "astonished his own contemporaries

The rare pamphlet detailing the sensational courtroom brawl in
which Terry and his wife were held in contempt and jailed by
Stephen J. Field, leading ultimately to Terry's tragic death a year
