few small spots to boards, small early vellum shelf label to foot of
spine. Title pages printed in red and black, attractive woodcut head-
pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Later bookplate to front
pastedown. Lower corner lacking from a leaf with no loss to text,
minor worming to final two leaves and rear pastedown, interior
otherwise notable fresh. An attractive, remarkably well-preserved
copy. $800.
* First edition. Jus Civile Controversum analyzes disputed the
analysis and contraction of topics in civil law through insights drawn
from philology and natural law. It is notable for its enlightened
views, such as the wholesale rejection of torture. As its title
indicates, Coccejus follows the series of topics in Lauterbach's
Compendium Juris Brevissimis (1678). High Chancellor of Prussia under
Frederick the Great and a notable reformer, he drafted the Codex
Fredericianus, which was adopted in 1794. OCLC locates eight copies,

spine ends, about half of lettering piece lacking. Front hinge cracked
but secure, split at center of text block. Woodcut headpieces, tail-
pieces and decorated initials. Early and later bookplates to front
pastedown, early signature to verso of front free endpaper. Later
notes and underlining in pencil to a few leaves, occasional light
foxing and dampstaining, interior otherwise clean. $500.
* Later edition. With index. First published in 1758, this treatise in
the form of a dictionary is a thorough layman's guide to French law
and the rights and duties of police, advocates and the courts.
Particular attention is given to duties and taxation. Clearly written,
it gives an excellent overview of the everyday practice of the law in
the final years of the Bourbon dynasty. Not in the British Museum

* Grotius/Blondel: Second edition; A.C.E.M.G.: Unrecorded work. De
Imperio and Tractatu Plebis address the rights of secular magistrates
in ecclesiastical matters. Completed in manuscript in 1617, De Imperio
is Grotius' most mature and subtle work on the political and legal
relationship between church and state. Officium Magistratus looks at
the sacred and secular jurisdictions of clerics. Blondel was a French
theologian and historian. A.C.E.M.G. has not been identified. Ter

* First edition. This comprehensive treatise on landlord and tenant
was a standard work for many years. (Its final edition, the eighth,
was issued in 1819.) A practical book designed mainly for the use of
stewards, it reflects the author's experience with court keeping.
Holdsworth includes this title among his list of notable works on land
law and speaks well of it. See his History of English Law XII: 380-

Court, 1834-1840]. 73 ruled leaves. Quarto (6-1/2" x 7-3/4").
Contemporary quarter sheep over marbled boards. '2' blind-stamped to
foot of spine. Moderate rubbing with wear to board edges and spine
ends, front board detached. Content in fine hand to both sides of 71
leaves, one leaf with content on one side, additional leaf with
content on one side tipped-in. Internally clean. Unique. $1,000.
* This manuscript contains detailed reports of cases heard "In
Justice's Court," Yonkers, New York between 1834 and 1840, along with
court fees. (It is probably one of a series of volumes compiled by the
court.) Many deal with labor issues and the supervision of the poor.
Others deal with debt, drunkenness and property (including livestock).
Taken together, these reports offer a fascinating view of the everyday
administration of justice in lower Westchester County in the early
nineteenth century.

edges, corners, joints and spine ends, hinges cracked but secure.
Light foxing to portions of text, interiors otherwise fresh. A
handsome set. $750.
* Fourth (and final) edition, revised. Ortolan was a jurist and sea-
captain. His Rules was first published in 1844-1845, and it remained a
standard work for decades. The second volume contains an extensive
133-page appendix of documents dealing with the Crimean War and the
American Civil War. Dealing mostly with the American conflict, it is a
valuable compendium of European and American source materials relating
to Europe's involvement in the Civil War. Marke, A Catalogue of the

Contemporary calf, rebacked, lettering pieces and blind rules to
spines, corners reinforced, endpapers renewed. Moderate rubbing with
wear to board edges, several scuffs to boards, a few cracks to spine,
minor wear to spine ends, Volume I hinges cracked but secure, partial
split to center of its text block. Annotations to verso of front free
endpaper and title page of Volume I. A few minor tears, dampspots and
light foxing to a few leaves, interior otherwise notably fresh. An
appealing copy of an uncommon set. $1,500.
* First edition by Evans. According to Marvin, "[Evans'] notes are
comprehensive and learned, and deserve a careful perusal in connexion
with the text, and he is entitled to considerable praise for having
furnished Pothier on Obligations to the profession in so good and
accurate an English garb." Holdsworth, who agrees with Marvin, adds
that this edition introduced Pothier to English lawyers, which "did
considerable service to the development of the English law of
contract." This edition was "soon recognized as a major contribution
to legal science...and frequently cited in British Courts.": Walker,

* First edition. Hoffmann's interesting volume contains an essay on
the interpretation and construction of Roman and canon law by
Pancirolli and six related treatises, such as Dialogi Sex de Veteribus
Iuris Interpretibus (1582) by Alberico Gentili [1552-1608]. Each of
these is paired with a lengthy author biography. British Museum

final leaf, interior otherwise fresh. A well-preserved copy in a
superb binding. $850.
* Second edition. This pamphlet is part of the literature that
attacked the use of general warrants, which granted unlimited powers
of search and seizure to the courts. Its argument that warrants should
be issued only when probable cause exists was incorporated in the
Fourth Amendment of the Bill of Rights. British Museum Catalogue
