Literally Translated. Intended for the Use of Students for All Legal
Examinations. London: Stevens & Haynes, 1881. vi, 39, [3], 43 pp.
Includes 43-page publisher catalogue. Octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2").
Original limp textured cloth, blind frames to boards, gilt titles to
front board and spine. Some rubbing with minor wear to board edges and
corners, two-inch chip to front joint, first gathering partially
detached but secure, internally clean. A nice copy of an uncommon
title. $150.
* First edition. Cotterell includes 144 maxims with translations and
glosses. Some entries have citations showing their use in leading

(4-3/4" x 8-1/4"). Contemporary calf, blind frames to boards, rebacked
in period style with raised bands and blind ornaments. Light rubbing
and a few scuffs to boards some wear to corners, front hinge cracked
but secure. Faint offsetting to margins of pastedowns and free
endpapers, interior notably fresh. $500.
* Third edition. This comprehensive treatise on landlord and tenant
was one of Jacob's most successful works. First published in 1713, it
remained a standard work for many years. (Its final edition, the
eighth, was issued in 1819.) A practical book designed mainly for the
use of stewards, it reflects the author's experience with court
keeping. Holdsworth includes this title among his list of notable
works on land law and speaks well of it. See his History of English

Pratique Contemporaines. Paris: A. Durand et Pedone-Lauriel, 1885-
1906. Eight volumes. Octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary quarter
morocco over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt titles and ornaments
to spines, marbled endpapers. Moderate rubbing with some wear to spine
ends, joints and corners, hinges of some volume starting. Light
browning to margins of most volumes, interiors otherwise clean. An
appealing set. $750.
* First edition. This comprehensive treatise is one of two titles
listed as references in the international law bibliography in Pound's
Outlines of Jurisprudence. It treats the whole of public international
law. In the manner of Vattel, it is a based on a close study of actual
practice in the United States and Europe. Pradier-Fodere is the author
of Cours de Droit Diplomatique (1881), Precis du Droit Administrif
(1872) and other practical and theoretical works. Pound, Outlines of

1890. cxvi, 916 pp. Octavo (6" x 9"). Recent cloth, endpapers renewed,
internally clean. A handsome copy. $250.
* First edition. This fascinating dictionary contains legal
definitions of such commonplace words and phrases as "but,"
"foundation," "reason,"  "taxes," "as far as," "usual and customary
manner" and "incorrigible rogue." Each entry is illustrated with
citations drawn from briefs, decisions and other legal documents.
Considered the most authoritative English dictionary well into the
