We just discovered yesterday that all of our postings to the Rare Books
list since early June have not appeared due to a changeover of computer
systems here. For anyone interested in knowing what those books are,
they were mostly derived from the following two lists on our web site.
Please visit and browse them if you are interested in our offerings.
Thank you.

ROOSEVELT, Eleanor & HICKOK, Lorena. LADIES OF COURAGE
(The Dedication Copy Inscribed to Molly Dewson). New York:
Putnam's (1954). First Edition. Molly Dewson's copy, to whom
the book is dedicated. Beneath the printed dedication is the
following INSCRIPTION in Eleanor Roosevelt's hand: "Molly
dear,/You started things for the/Ladies so we dedicate
this/to you with admiration &/affection." SIGNED by both
Roosevelt and Hickok below. An account of women's struggle
for recognition in American public life with a chapter on
Eleanor Roosevelt by Hickok as well as a number of
references to Dewson. At one point Hickok writes about
Dewson's habit of thrusting her hands into her pockets. In
the margin Dewson has written "I never did this. M.W.D."
Dewson, a lesbian, entered politics at Eleanor Roosevelt's
request, organizing Democratic women for Al Smith's
presidential campaign in 1928 and for FDR's campaign in 1932,
going on to become head of the Democratic National
Committee's Women's Division where, among her
accomplishments, she succeeded in getting women on the
Platform Committee at the national Democratic Convention.
Under her leadership in the 1930s women for the first time
made an active and important contribution to the election of
a President. Dewson was also largely responsible for the
appointment of the first female Cabinet member. The
thirty-year relationship between the authors of the book,
Roosevelt and Hickok, who actually lived in the White House
during part of FDR's term, has been the source of much
speculation with many believing that they were more than
friends. THE most important copy of this uncommon title.
Withdrawn from a library with pocket at rear. Minimal
library markings. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper.
