Obsequens, Julius. PRODIGORUM LIBER… Conradum Lycosthenem… Restitutus.
Polydori Vergilii… De Prodigiis Libri III. Joachimi Camerarii… De Ostentis Libri II
… Figuris Illustrata. Lyon: Joan. Tornaesium. 1589. 16mo. (5” tall).
(16),334,(16)pp. Index. Illustrated with 51 half-page woodcuts (2” x 2”). Cont.
vellum. A fine copy. $1,750.00 (trade discount allowed)
An excellent pocket edition of this 4th century author’s work on omens and
portents based on historical accounts of supernatural and miraculous events.
There are 2 additional complimentary texts by Polidore Vergil and J. Camerarius.
The 1589 edition is a reprint of the 1553 De Tournes edition, with the
addition of this fine series of woodcuts, mostly taken from the French translation
printed by Jean De Tournes in 1555 (although that edition contains only 44
cuts). The first illustrated edition of Obsequens work is 1562, but with different
woodcuts than our edition of 1589. See Cartier #682. Adams O9.
