* First edition. This classic study of English feudalism originated in
a series of lectures delivered at Gresham College. The first part is
devoted to social and political life between the fall of the Roman
Empire and the settlement of the Barbarians in Europe. Abdy then turns
to the rise of feudalism and its characteristics. The rest of the book
traces its development in England from the Teutons to the Normans.

* First edition. Blount provides "under the heads of various places in
which the land was situated, various curious tenures, and customs of
manors, which he had come across in his study of records. It was meant
both to amuse and instruct; and it does instruct, because it is a
painstaking piece of work, taken from the original authorities, which
preserved the memory of many old customs which were rapidly decaying
when the book was written.": Holdsworth, History of English Law
VI:611. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British
Commonwealth of Nations I:398 (7). Wing, Short-Title Catalogue of

latter issue contains the notorious Article VI, "An Oath Injoyn'd for

4. Defense of Administration That Repealed the Stamp and Sugar Acts
[Cooper, Sir Grey (d. 1801)]. The Merits of the New Administration
Truly Stated; In Answer to the Several Pamphlets and Papers Published
Against Them. London: Printed for J. Williams, 1765. 48 pp. Octavo (5-

* The Marquis of Rockingham served a controversial term as First Lord
of the Treasury in 1765-1766. He inherited the colonial problems in
America that had been provoked by Grenville's administration and
resolved the civil unrest there by repealing the Stamp Act and
revising the Sugar Act. Although his ministry passed the Declaratory
Act, he made a distinction between having the right to legislate for
the colonies and actually exercising that right. Unpopular for his
accommodating attitude toward the colonists, he was replaced by Pitt
the Elder in 1766. British Museum Catalogue (Compact Edition) 6:212.

5. Early Stalinist Show Trials
[Trial]. Gabor, Andor, Editor. Spione und Saboteure vor dem
Volksgericht in Moskau: Bericht Uber den Hochverratsprozess Gegen
Ramsin und Genossen vom 25. November bis 7. Dezember 1930 im
Gewerkshafthaus in Moskau auf Grund der Stenografischen Protokolle
Zusammengestellt, mit Drei Zeichnungen von Deni, Moskau. Berlin: Neuer
Deutscher Verlag, 1931. 128 pp. Four illustrations. Original pictorial
wrappers. Some toning, light wear to spine and edges. Occasional faint
dampspotting to margins, interior otherwise clean. A well-preserved
copy. $300.
* In order to eliminate potential rivals, Stalin accused them of
assassination plots or espionage, all coordinated by the exiled Leon
Trotsky. Once arrested, the accused were tortured or otherwise coerced
into signing confessions. They were then subjected to public show
trials, convicted, then sent to the gulag or executed. Historians
usually point to the famous 1936 trials as the beginning of this
process, but others occured at an earlier date. This book, which
contains a transcript of some of the earliest trials, along with
background information, transcripts of documents and four political
cartoons, offers a glimpse of the show trials in their earliest
stages, a period before they had perfected the "script" used in 1936.

* Fifth edition. Putter, a German jurist, was the most important

Encyclopedia of Social Sciences points out, he disentangled the early
German law from its many linguistic and structural difficulties
putting it in a form which "by virtue of its grace, rationality and
elegance rises above ponderous structure of the old Reich." Anleitung
zur Juristischen Praxi discusses judicial administration, pleading,
titles of honor, legal ceremony and the orthography and spelling of
legal German. First published in 1753, it went through several
editions into the nineteenth century. OCLC locates three copies. This
edition not in the British Museum Catalogue. Encyclopedia of the
Social Sciences XIV:7.

8. First Complete Edition of Spelman's Glossarium
Spelman, Henry [1564?-1641]. [Dugdale, Sir William (1605-1686),
Editor]. Glossarium Archaiologicum: Continens Latino-Barbara,

quarter calf over cloth, raised bands, lettering piece, endpapers

Spel.' in large early hand to fore-edge. Occasional spark burns,
inkspots and brief annotations, interior otherwise clean. Appealing.
$1,750.
* Second edition. Originally published in 1626, the Glossarium was the
earliest English dictionary of legal and historical terms based on
philological methods. The product of considerable archival research
and consultation with scholars throughout Europe, Spelman's dictionary
superseded all previous attempts at legal lexicography. As Holdsworth
observes, "It is a great deal more than a law dictionary, being a
dictionary of Latin and other words to be found in all the post-
classical authors and documents English and foreign....In fact it is a
product of that new school of historians and historically minded
lawyers" (V:402). This point is supported by Winfield, who notes its
usefulness when interpreting terms used in the Domesday Book. The
first edition contains terms from A to L. Unfortunately, Spelman did
not live to bring his proposed second volume to print. The second
edition, which was edited by Dugdale, is the first with terms from A
to Z. Cowley, A Bibliography of Abridgments, Digests, Dictionaries,
and Indexes of English Law to the Year 1800 lxxxviii, 75 (155).
Winfield, Chief Sources of English Legal History 112. Wing, Short-
Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales,
and British America S4925.
