Ballentine, James A. [1871-1949], Compiler. A Law Dictionary of Words,

Those Which Have a Peculiar Meaning in the Law. Also Latin Phrases and
Maxims With Their Translations Including an Appendix Containing a List
of Abbreviations of Law Books with Their Meaning, an Explanation of
Words and Symbols Used in Law Publications, and a Table Showing How to
Ascertain the Date of an English Decision. Rochester: The Lawyers Co-
Operative Publishing Co., 1923. [vi], 636 pp. Original textured cloth,
minor shelfwear, internally clean. A nice copy of an uncommon work.

* Reissue of the first edition, an exact restrike from the plates used
by Bancroft-Whitney in 1916. Along with those of Black and Anderson,
Ballentine's is one of the most important American dictionaries of the
modern era. Containing over 18,000 entries and a 97-page index of
American and English law and equity reports, it is renowned for its
concision and accuracy. Immediately popular when published in 1916, it
went through three editions by 1969 and served as the basis of the
College Law Dictionary (First edition, 1931) and the Self-Pronouncing
Law Dictionary (1948).

Octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled
boards, raised bands, gilt ornaments to spine. Light rubbing to
boards, some wear to board edges, joints and corners, marbled
endpapers, top edge gilt. Front hinge just starting near head,
occasional light foxing, owner signature to front endleaf, brief
annotations and underlining to a few leaves. A handsome volume. $150.
* Second French edition. This classic study was one of the first to
appreciate the significance of Lieber's Instructions for the
Government of Armies of the United States in the Field (1863). It is
discussed at length in the text and a complete translation is included
as an appendix. Bluntschli was an influential Swiss jurist, statesman
and professor of law at the universities of Munich and Heidelberg. He
was one of the founders of the Institute for International Law.

1/2"). Contemporary quarter-calf over textured cloth. Moderate rubbing
with some wear to spine ends, board edges and corners. Light foxing to
portions of text, interiors otherwise fresh. A nice set. $450.
* Fourth (and final) edition, revised. Ortolan was a jurist and sea-
captain. His Rules was first published in 1844-1845, and it remained a
standard work for decades. The second volume contains an extensive
133-page appendix of documents dealing with the Crimean War and the
American Civil War. Dealing mostly with the American conflict, it is a
valuable compendium of European and American source materials relating

number 1093. Bold author signature to limitation statement. "[A]n
important work on comparative law [that] contains a wholly original
idea for the teaching of legal history--the idea that pictures can be
used to aid the teaching of the history of the great legal systems of
the world. It is as original as the idea which Mansfield suggested to
Blackstone in the middle of the 18th century, that English law should
be taught at the universities. I had the privilege of attending one of
these picture lectures at Northwestern, and both that lecture and
Wigmore's book convinced me that this method of teaching legal history

* Produced by the Virginia State Bar Association, this book collects
two addresses presented at meetings in 1897 and 1900. They discuss two
important treason cases that took place in the United States Court in
Richmond with the Chief Justice of the United States, sitting on
circuit, presiding.
