1. ASIOLI, BONIFAZIO : L'ALLIEVO AL CLAVICEMBALO. [Milano] G. Ricordi Year:
[1819] 278Pp., music., 26 x 34 cm. Pl. no. 650-652./ Engraved./ Contains 3
parts; the 2d and 3d parts also paged separately. Volume 1 and II are bound
in one oblong folio volume, volume III in a separate volume. The last
contemporary text book for the Harpsichord [=clavicembalo]. It is a
complete course of study in that instrument. This, his last published
pedagogic work, was issued the year before his death. He suggests to
keyboard players that they continue and play the very beautiful sonatas of
Clementi, Haydn and Mozart and then the grand sonatas of Dussek, Steibelt,
Beethoven and Pollini [P. 95 Vol. II]. In the last volume he uses music by
Mozart and Paisiello as his major models. But he also seeks to have
students learn how to improvise an overture, figure a bass without any
numbers by following the melodic lines, and finally to orchestrate and read
orchestra parts from the keyboard. The author, the first director of the
conservatory of Milan, was first a harpsichord virtuoso, and later a
successful operatic composer. Baker notes highlights from his career as a
composer and teacher. There are many holdings for his works and modern
recordings. OCLC: 21899796, 3 Locs. in the USA, [CUY, LNN, INU]. In period

9. SPOHR, LOUIS : JESSONDA : OPER IN FREI AKTEN : Leipzig : C.F. Peters,
Libretto by Eduard Heinrich Gehe, based on La veuve du Malabar, by A.M. Le
Mierre. Vocal scores with piano arranged by Ferdinand Spohr.[1826 or
7] Leipzig, im Bureau de Musique von C.F. Peters Oblong 4to, [2], 71, 69,
47 p. 26 x 33 cm. The Overture has been arranged for piano, 4 hands. Music
No: 1801; C.F. Peters, plates engraved. The first Vocal score with piano.
For many years, Louis Spohr's reputation was kept alive only by his Eighth
Violin Concerto in the Efrem Zimbalist recording, a concerto which treats
the violin in a quite operatic way. In his own day, Spohr was famous as a
symphonist and even more as an operatic composer. After receiving his
appointment to Cassel as conductor for life, according to Baker: "He won
lasting renown as a conductor and reached his zenith as a composer with the
opera Jessonda [1823],...". His reputation has changed today. Now there
are several complete opera recordings of Jessonda to choose from on the
market. This is the first piano score version, issued in response to the
large demand in the years after its success. RLIn, 1 Loc. BOUND
WITH : HUMMEL, JOHANN NEPOMUK : MATHILDE VON GUISE; HEROISCH-KOMISCHE
OPER mit teutschen und italienischen Texte in Musik gesetzt von J. N.
Hummel. Klavier-Auszug vom Componisten. Leipzig, C. F. Peters [ca.1823]
Pl. no. 1761. 84, 67, 37 p. 26 x 33 cm. The libretto is an uncredited
translation of a French libretto by Charles Marguerite Dupaty, by Jean
Baptiste Mercier. [Loewenberg. Annals of Opera. ] The First vocal score
with piano, the arrangement by the composer. A student of Mozart, Hummel
was a great piano virtuoso, at one time considered a rival of
Beethoven. The opera is opus 100 and is a late work. Grove's for 1910
notes it but makes no comment about it. Most of his orchestral music has
unfortunately not come down to us because of the lack of parts and full
scores. But there has been a Hummel revival in recent years. To
understand his reputation at the time, it is wise to remember that The
Death and the Maiden was ordered from Schubert so as to have the same
instrumentation as the Hummel. RLIn, 1 Loc., NYPL. In original marbled
boards, Mro. label of M.M. Anderson, hinges cracked, on cords, OW VG. $1000.00
10. WEBER, CARL MARIA VON : CONCERTSTUECK (Largo affetuoso, Allegro
passionata. Marza y Rondo giocoso) FUER DAS PIANOFORTE MIT BEGLEITUNG DES
ORCHESTERS. 79tes Werk. Ausgabe fuer Pianoforte ohne Begleitung [Edition
for pianoforte alone] With etched title page and
music. Leipzig, Bureau de Musique de C. Peters, (Pl..-Nr. 1754.2817. 27
Pp., Folio. First Edition for Piano without accompaniment. This work has
remained in the repertoire since Weber's day. But since it is not long
enough for a soloist to play, by itself, with an orchestra, it has not
been quite so common during the past few years. However this version, for
piano alone, written by Weber, himself, presents an alternative version as
a selection in a solo recital. "Die glanzspruehenden Passagen Druecken
innigste wonne und Hoechsten Jubel aus und stempeln schleisslich dies
Conzertstueck zum effektvollsten und hinreissendsten aller bis dahin
erschienenen Tonwerke aehnliche gattung." [The virtuoso passages reveal the
most intimate feeling and the highest rejoicing. Finally,
this Conzertstueck was the most impressive and most romantic statement of
all piano works which appeared up to the period of its composition.].
