GUILLAUMIN, Emile. /THE LIFE OF A SIMPLE MAN/. Beige paper over boards,
with beige linen spine and paper spine label. Selwyn & Blount, London.
1923. 12mo, pp. xvi, 272. Translated by Margaret Holden, with a
Foreward by Edward
Garnett. Translated from the French and first published in 1919, this is
the limited edition.
From the colophon: "One hundred copies have been issued of this book
with seven hand-coloured woodcuts by Agatha Walker. This is no. 52". The
story of a French peasant farmer's life (probably modelled after the
author's father), similar in style to George Bourne's /Memoirs of a
Surrey Labourer/. Though the hero of this book was a /metayer/, and did
not own the land he farmed, "his outlook and worldy state were as
typically a product of the French rural system of 1823-1890, as the
Surrey labouer [in Bourne'sbook] was typical of the English rural life
of identically the same period." (from the Foreward by Garnett). All
seven of the brilliantly hand-coloured woodcuts are present, each of
which is a work of art in itself. The book is very slightly soiled at
the bottom edges of the boards. The binding is slightly stressed, but
still tight and the endpapers are clean and not split. The contents are
unmarked. In all, the book is in very good to near fine condition. The
scarce and delicate dust jacket has a hand-coloured reproduction of
Walker's frontispiece on the front panel. It is chipped at the edges,
and shows some light spotting, or foxing, visible more on the plain back
panel than the front. It is in about good condition.
