STEPHENS, HENRY L.: THE FABLES OF AESOP; WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY HENRY L.
STEPHENS ; 1868. [i]-x, 1-76 p., 1l. : ill. ; 32 cm. New York : J.W.
Bouton. This issue was limited to 250 copies and presents all of the plates
as proofs before lettering. Like the Nursery Rhymes series which was
issued in an ordinary edition and in two limited editions, one of 100 large
paper copies with each book separately pubvlished, and one in which three
of the series were published in each volume of a two volume set, this issue
was for adult collectors of Stephens illustrations. He was the only
American artist of the 19th century for whom collectors limited editions
were issued in the 19th century. He was also the only American artist who
came up with an independent style drawing animals in human clothes and
postures. Although he was indebted to both Kaulbach and Grandville, his
style is individual and different from their work. He may have been
influenced by William Holbrook Beard, who showed animals in manlike
postures and actions, but not wearing any clothes and in forest settings,
something which Stephens also did. OCLC: 3 Locs. [NYP, OUN, TXH], no copy
of any issue of this work is to be found at Hamilton 1 or Supplement, nor
at the MWA {American Antiquarian Society]. Original ¼ calf, gilt Dec.
spine, gilt titles, black cloth boards, marbled EPs., Very Good externally,
Fine within. $1500.00
