(COMPLETE IN SIX VOLUMES).
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933-38. First American printings, Full
cloth, Octavos, over 2,400 pages, Black & white portraits, facsimiles,
fold-out maps, etc.. Very Good, No dust jackets.
      Churchill's landmark biography of his ancestor, John Churchill, first
Duke of Marlborough. Covers his life from 1650-1722 in six volumes. All
volumes are first U.S. printings, with Scribner's "A" on copyright page;
uniform green cloth with gilt stamped spines; numerous illustrations,
facsimiles, portraits, fold-out maps, etc. Each volume individually indexed
with bibliographies at end of each volume except volumes I and III. Set
overall very good to near fine, no dust jackets. Two of the volumes bear the
tasteful bookplate of a prior owner. Volume VI has a peculiar defect--almost
like a worm hole--that goes completely through the text and both boards. It
is no larger than a pin hole and is clean. Two of the volumes have a small
stain about midway along the spine. Otherwise a clean and sturdy set with
just a few bits of external wear. No cracked hinges, gilt remains strong.
