1. STRADANUS, JOHANNES (JAN VAN DER STRAET) 1523-1605. VENATIONES
FERARUM, AVIUM, PISCIUM & MUTUAE BESTIARUM. Antwerp: Philips Galle,
1578. Illustrated by Engraved frontispiece and 104 fascinating
plates, each depicting a different hunting, fishing or murderous
baiting scene, involving humans and animals. The engravings were done
by Philips Galle, Carol de Mallery, John Collaert, Cornelius Galle,
and Adrian Galle after the designs by Stradanus. First edition.
Original full vellum gilt. Oblong folio (27 x 35 cm). Stradanus,
Flemish painter and draughtsman, was born in Bruges in 1523 and died
in Florence in 1605. According to van Mander, Stradanus became a
master in Antwerp ca. 1545. In the same year, he left for Italy,
having heard of the excellence of the Italian painters. He traveled
by way of Lyon, where he worked with Corneille de Lyon. The traces of
his Flemish artistic heritage were much appreciated in the refined
Mannerist circle, led by Vasari, in which he was active in Florence.
