LUCY, WILLIAM: OBSERVATIONS, CENSURES, AND CONFUTATIONS OF NOTORIOUS
ERROURS IN MR. HOBBES HIS LEVIATHAN, and other his bookes. To which are
annexed, occasional animadversions on some writings of the Socinians, and
such haereticks; of the same opinion with him. London, Printed by J.G. for
Nath. Brooke ..., 1663. 23 p. l., 440, [22] p. (lacks coat of arms used as
Frontis.) 20 cm.: FIRST EDITION. p. 207-208, 368 incorrectly numbered 208,
200, 378 respectively. Table to the several chapters following prelim.
quire 6, signed Lll-Ooo. -first errata on verso of the last page of the
table. With a second and final errata leaf. Title within double line
border, marginal notes. Lucy objects to the thoroughly rationalist and
utilitarian philosophy of Hobbes and to his demystification of Christian
religion. Hobbes, while a Christian and willing to act as a pious Anglican,
if necessary, none the less describes the "Spirit of God" only in
allegorical terms, and Angels as more examples of the same. This as well
as his basing of the good things in the state on the delegation of powers
from the individual all go contra to Lucy's orthodox understanding of
Christian religion and of Aristotelian Ethics.. CBEL I, 878, Wing; L3454;
OCLC 3 Locs.[CLU, NUI, RBN]. Marbled boards, later half calf, black title
label, silvered. Title page with water margins OW Very Good. $1125.00
