Giessen: Karger, Jan, 1665. Complete and in fine condition, square
demy-quarto (16 cm by 20 cm - 6½inches by 7¾ inches); 8 pages; [A] Aii -
Aiii [Aiv]; first and only edition. Bound in the nineteenth century French
style, approximately imitating Chapron, in modern long-grained steel blue
Oasis, inlaid with a cut-cornered rectangular cartouche in Prussian blue
calf, with the central figure of a comet surrounded by stars, worked in
gilt by hand, bordered with stylized tulips in gilt; the back board
likewise decorated, though with only stars - representing constellations -
in the cartouche, titled in gilt to the backstrip on a matching deep blue
label. Woodcut title page vignette showing an astronomer observing two
blazing comets, while a circle of smoke crosses the sky.
Only one other copy located worldwide (British Library), with no German or
US holdings. No auction records for the past 100 years. Scans of binding
and title page available upon request. $9,500
