Falke, Otto Van. DECORATIVE SILKS.
New York; William Helburn Inc.: 1922.

Since its first publication in 1913, this has remained a respected study
of silks, from ancient times through the 17th century, with an emphasis on
pre-1500 examples. This edition differs from the 1913 edition in having
had the text cut. As Falke notes in his foreword, in the eight years
between editions, no serious arguments had been brought to light disputing
his conclusions, so here he eliminates the "extensive argumentations,
refutations of opinions now grown obsolete, and quotations of
documents...and to present here in concise form only the essential results
necessary to an interpretation of the illustrations". Hardcover. 10"x14",
48 pages of text plus 10 color plates and 526 b/w figures; covers somewhat
worn with the spine head torn and peeled back for about an inch; spine
base chipped; tips bumped and a bit threadbare; hinges shaken; small
institutional stamp on endpaper; slight closed tear to the margin on Plate
II; a nice working copy, but not in superlative condition. [03402] $300.00

Thornton, Peter. BAROQUE AND ROCOCO SILKS.
New York; Taplinger Publishing Company: 1965.

The first complete study of the beautiful silks of the 17th and 18th
centuries, including richly brocaded dress materials, splendid damasks and
sumptuous velvets. "It has long been realized that the patterns on these
silks were changed each year but it was only quite recently that it became
possible to plot the changes. Mr. Thornton traces the development of this
art- an art practised by highly specialized designers working in a medium
governed by severe mechanical and practical limitations, which makes their
achievement more remarkable. For the best of these silks can take their
place proudly alongside the finest porcelain, the most intricate
silverware, the most sumptuous furniture -indeed any of the superb
creations of the genius of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries".
Cool. Hardcover. 9"x11", 209 pages plus 4 color and 120 b/w plates,
lightly worn dj, jacket spine slight faded. [05369] $375.00
