Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7197 ) Barrie, Robert and George Barrie, Jr.. CRUISES, MAINLY IN THE
BAY OF THE CHESAPEAKE.
Philadelphia: Franklin Press, 1909. First edition, later issue, Full cloth,
Octavo, [x], 276 pages + 3 pp. Ads, black & white photographic plates. Near
Fine, No dust jacket.
A Chesapeake Bay classic. The first book to draw significant attention
to the Bay as ideally suited for pleasure boating. The Barrie brothers were
members of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Philadelphia, and made their first
cruise the Bay in 1897 by way of the C&D Canal. This was just at the
beginning of the reign of the skipjack among Chesapeake Bay workboats, and
of course there were numerous other workboats plying the Bay's waters then.
But George Barrie later recalled that "Yachts in those days were almost as
scarce as hen's teeth." (in Burgess, "This was Chesapeake Bay.") The book is
written in a superbly readable style and does not confine itself to scenes
on the water. Includes many interesting vignettes of Annapolis, Oxford, St.
Michael's, activity around the boatyards, etc. Superbly illustrated with
dozens of photographic plates depicting the native sailing craft as well as
scenes in the sleepy shore towns and boatyards. (The quality of these
illustrations in the 1956 edition is rather inferior to the original plates
herein.) Fold-out map of the Bay at rear. HOWES #B-176; TOY #1023;
PRATT-EASTERN SHORE #35; MORRIS & HOWLAND p. 11. Bound in original emerald
green cloth over boards with black spine title and black upper board
vignette. First edition sheets from 1909 bound with 3 pages of publisher ads
at rear which were not present in the first issue of the book. Minor edge
wear, faint foxing to endpapers, prior owner gift inscription on front free
endpaper. Unobtrusive adhesion marks from an old name or holiday label on
front pastedown, portion of such label remains on rear pastedown. Slight
ripple to cloth running diagonally across about 4" of upper board. Fold-out
map has one short tear at attachment point. Binding is sound and sturdy.
Great copy overall of a scarce and important Chesapeake item. $175.00
