British and American Authors Living and Deceased From the Earliest Accounts
to the Latter Half of the Nineteenth Century, Three Volumes; Samuel Austin
Allibone; J. B. Lippincott & Co. And Childs & Peterson, Philadelphia,1858:
The full three volume set of this monumental scholarly work; thirty thousand
biographies and literary notices, with forty indexes of subjects. Volume One
is published and dedicated to Childs & Peterson, 1858 with an inscription on
the f.e.p. to L. Johnson, Esq., Phila.  dated March 24, 1859 S. Austin
Allibone. Seems to be a print of the original inscrip.? Contains Preface and
Introduction to Early English Literary History, with Chronological Tables of
Prominent Authors and their Works, from A.D. 500 to A.D. 1850 and Some
Directions for a Course of English Reading. (1005 pages) Volume II and III
published and dedicated to J.P. Lippincott, Philadelphia 1870. Each volume
has Old English lettering initials of previous owner to dedication and
inscription page. Three quarto morocco, mottled black, brown, red boards,
ridged spine, gilt title and numbering to spine. Red and blue marbled end
papers and page ends. Rubbing of corners spine ends and hinges, volume III
lower corner well rubbed, 3/4 inch chip to lower spine, front board
re-attached hinge weak. All three very solidly bound with clean bright text.
In vg+ condition for age. 4to, over 6000 pages total. Each appears to be
First Edition. Beautiful edition to any antiquarian library. $375.00
