Second edition (and the first in quarto) which, as the extended
title suggests, permits the presiding magistrate and anyone else to
see at a glance the salient elements of the charges lodged against
a prisoner and the prospective punishments.

Comprising the Whole of the Law Respecting Commitments,

The self-standing portion of Archbold's classic work devoted to
summary offenses before justices of the peace, the third volume
concerning the poor laws and the fourth indictable offenses; a rare
work, no copy in OCLC, three in KVK, one incomplete.

4.  BOSCAWEN, William.  A Treatise on Convictions on Penal
Statutes.  Printed for James Moore. . .and Henry Watts [etc.],
Dublin, 1792.  Contemporary calf, front joint tender, yet still

First Dublin edition, appearing in the same year as the first
London, of Boscawen's pioneering treatise, examining the summary
powers of justices of the peace to try and convict without a jury,
a subject neglected by Burn and others in earlier works.

5.  BURN, Richard.  The Justice of the Peace, and Parish Officer.
The Fifth Edition. Folio.  Printed by Henry Lintot . . . for A.
Millar, in the Strand, [London], 1758.  Contemporary calf,
rebacked, the original spine and label laid down, a bit shaken, but

A rare folio edition of Burn's 'Justice', the most popular work
ever written on justices of the peace, and (with the one other
folio edition--the third) likely the most handsome, well-printed
edition to appear; no copy in ESTC in this country.

One of several works compiled on Massachusetts law by the Yale
Law-trained Dickinson, unusual in expressly going beyond the
confines of its jurisdiction to encompass both federal and common
law; printed by John Wilson, the author's brother-in-law.

Only American edition of a popular everyman law book printed in
Belfast over much of the 18th century, ably combining brief
introductory commentary with multiple and varied forms supplemented
by sample informations and indictments on matters criminal.

10.  FREEMAN, Samuel.  The Town Officer: Or the Power and Duty of
Selectmen . . . And other Town Officers. As Contained in the Laws
of . . . of Massachusetts . . . To which are added, The Power and
Duty of Towns, Parishes and Plantations [etc.]. The Third Edition.

An early edition of Freeman's first work, ably discussing the
duties of dozens of officials (including such obscure examples as
deer reeves, provers of butter, and pearl ash inspectors),
anticipating his 45 year career as Massachusetts court clerk.
