Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7467 ) Weems, P[hilip]. V[an]. H[orn].. PACIFIC TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
NAVIGATION COURSE [BINDER'S TITLE] (SIGNED BY WEEMS).
[Annapolis]: (s.n.), [1964]. Full cloth, Octavo, Charts, diagrams, tables.
Good, Issued without dustjacket.
A bound collection of booklets which comprised a navigation course
written by P. V. H. Weems for Pacific Technical University in 1928. These 20
lessons, prepared while Weems was serving as the executive officer of the
U.S.S. Cuyama, represent one of the earliest presentations of Weems's
pioneering work in air navigation. Weems was the critical man in adapting
and streamlining traditional marine celestial navigation methods for use at
the much greater speed required by aviation. The course was dedicated to
Charles Lindbergh. A short Preface SIGNED by Weems on the front free
endpaper nostalgically discusses this early work. Laid in is a manuscript
letter written and signed by Weems on his own stationery. The letter
presents this volume to his associate, Dale Dunlap, and recommends that it
go to the Smithsonian when no longer needed for reference. Also bears
Weems's bookplate on front pastedown. The 20 individual lessons are bound
together in their original orange covers, with the exception of the fourth
one, "Charts (Marine #3)," which is lacking the covers. In addition, while
all the lessons are present and complete, a few of the individual booklets
are loose from the cloth binding. Bound in maroon cloth over boards with
gilt titles on spine and upper board. Minimal extremity rubs. An important
landmark in early aviation. $200.00
