FROST, S. A. /PARLOR ACTING CHARADES, Intended Solely for Performance in
the Drawing Room, and Requiring no Expensive Scenery or Properties to
render them Effective./ Bound in original stapled decorated wraps.
Published by Dick & Fitzgerald, New York City. 1876. 1st edition. Tall
12mo, pp. 182, ads. Rear wrapper absent, front wrapper soiled, chipped
and worn; spine chipped, contents clean & tight; overall good condition.

Containing twelve charades, each with its own title, viz. "Matrimony",
"Misfortune", "Mad-Cap", "Purse-Proud", etc. From the Preface: "The
increasing taste for Amateur Theatricals has transformed the old pastime
[of charades] into a well-prepared performance, and the 'Acting Charade'
of to-day is a complete amateur dramatic
entertainment. There is, in consequence, a growing demand for really
good, sensible 'Charades' for parlor performance.." "The Charades
presented in this book were written exactly with that object..." and
were first published in 1866 in a book entitled /The Parlor Stage/.
However, as the editor admits, so popular were the charades in that book
that they have been re-published in this format. "The plots are simple
and intelligent, the dresses are almost all of the present-day, and the
properties such as are to be found in every well-appointed
house, with the single exception of a curtain." A very scarce item,
partially due, no doubt, to the fragility of the manner in which it is
bound. No copies offered for sale on the internet at the time this
listing was posted. OCLC lists five copies: three in university
libraries, one in a public library and one in the Library of Congress.
At the end of the book is a 26-page catalogue of Dick & Fitzgerald books.
