STATES. WITH A PORTRAIT OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN, AND OTHER ILLUSTRATIVE
ENGRAVINGS OF THE SCENE OF THE ASSASSINATION, ETC..
Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson & Brothers, (1865). Full cloth, Duodecimo,
[viii], 15-299, [i] pages, engraved plates. Very good.
      The rather ponderous title rambles on thusly: "With a full history of
his Life; Assassination; Death and Funeral. His career as a Lawyer and
Politician; his services in Congress; with his Speeches, Proclamations,
Acts, and services as President of the United States, and Commander-in-Chief
of the Army and Navy, from the time of his first Inauguration as President
of the United States, until the night of his Assassination. Only new and
complete edition, with a full history of the assassination, by distinguished
eye-witnesses of it. Mr. Lincoln's Death-bed scenes, and a full account of
the Funeral Ceremonies, from the time his remains were placed in the East
Room at the White House, until they were finally consigned to their last
resting place, in Oak Ridge Cemetery, as Springfield, Illinois; with
Addresses and Sermons by the Hon. Schuyler Colfax; Hon. George Bancroft;
Rev. Henry Ward Beecher; General Walbridge; Bishop Simpson, etc., with a
full account of the escape, pursuit, apprehension, and death of the
assassin, Booth." The first 180 or so pages of this book were originally
published as a campaign biography for Lincoln's re-election bid in 1864.
With the assassination it was augmented with accounts of the second
inauguration and events surrounding the assassination and funeral, and
reissued. Contains 11 plates, including depictions of Booth's escape from
Ford's Theatre, Booth being burnt out of the barn, various public buildings
draped in mourning cloth, the funeral catafalque at Springfield, Lincoln's
tomb, etc. Also includes the funeral oration of Rev. Gurley, the order of
procession of the funeral, list of pall bearers, and more. MONAGHAN #368.
Bound in original brown pebbled cloth over boards with gilt-titled spine and
blind-stamped publisher's device on both boards, pale yellow endpapers. Mild
fading to spine, shallow fraying to spine ends, shallow bumps to fore
corners. Light foxing and browning throughout, mild brown dampstaining at
inner margin of first several leaves. Hinges not cracked.    $175.00
