CHURCHILL, Winston Spencer. /LONDON TO LADYSMITH Via Pretoria/. Copp,
Clark Company, Toronto. 1900. Small 8vo, with three folding maps (one
coloured) plans, and other maps. Also published in London and New York
by Longmans, Green; this is the first Canadian edition, similar in format.

Mainly an account, based on Churchill's newspaper dispatches, of his
"adventures and impressions during the first five months of the African
war", his escape after capture by the Boers, and a "tolerably coherent
account of the operations conducted by Sir Redvers Buller for the Relief
of Ladysmith" during the time of the Boer War. The first of two books he
wrote on the conflict. An exceptionally attractive appearing copy, as
the cloth boards nicely show an unbesmirched embossed depiction of an
armored military train below the title, which is stamped in black and
red. The spine, which is so often found faded, is bright and clean. The
front free endpaper, and
half-title page, have been neatly removed. The folding map ("Mr. W. S.
Churchill's Journey"), before the title page, is a bit creased with one
small vertical spot of discolouration. There are no markings to the
text, although at pp. 327, and from pp. 450 to the end of the text,
there is some foxing, mainly confined to the margins. The bottom outside
corners of the last 40, or so, pages show minor rippling, as from early
exposure to damp, but this has left no mustiness, or other sign, save
the rippling and discolouration aforementioned. There is
also a "shadow" to the rear free endpaper and rear pastedown, as from an
old newspaper clipping (now absent). The front board is slightly bowed
and the corners a bit bumped. Overall, a handsome, sound copy of a very
scarce Churchill title, especially in the Canadian edition, the print
run of which was apparently less than for the English and American
editions. Digital photos available.

Price: $650.00.
