(sorry for the error in the subject line of the previous message)
We are pleased to offer the following:
GEORGE HYDE’S COPY OF RED CLOUD’S FOLK
Hyde, George E. RED CLOUD'S FOLK; A HISTORY OF THE OGLALA SIOUX
INDIANS. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1937. First edition.
Octavo, gray paper wrappers. xii, 332pp. with index and a colophon.
Illustrated. Frontispiece. Original pencil signed etching, a portrait
of Red Cloud by Lyman Byxbe, western artist and etcher. Two maps. Very
good. No. 2 of two authors' copies. Signed and numbered by Hyde on the
series half title and on the colophon. Present with this copy are the
following; Eleven colored "scraps" of paper with typed detailed
interesting notes refering to subjects in the book; An 8 1/2" x 11"
manuscript map in pencil and ink, highly detailed of the indian
encampments at Pine Ridge, 1880-85. This map is very different from the
two maps that appear in the book; an autograph note "With best wishes
of the author George E. Hyde July 1951" ; a typed letter, signed from
Hyde to William Kelleher, dated 1952 mentioning a rejected novel by
Macmillan and some other small talk, concluding, "Be good and don't
spend money on editors, taking them to night clubs is a waste of money.
The devils make up their own minds about a novel and no amount of night
clubs will shake their decisions." Howes H-860. Luther High Spot #96.
