[ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA]. /THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA A Dictionary
of Arts, Sciences, Literature and General Information. Eleventh
edition./ 29 volumes, uniformly bound in moss green coloured suede,
a.e.g., with maps, colored, b&w illustrations. Cambridge University
Press, Cambridge, UK. 1910-1911. 11th edition, 4to. The "thin paper
edition", printed on onionskin paper, complete with the custom made
mahogany tiered standing bookcase.

This, the most famous of all encyclopedias in the English language, was
sponsored by a "Society of Gentlemen in Scotland", (/Printing and the
Mind of Man/) and was first published in three volumes in 1771. This is
perhaps the most desirable edition of this encyclopedia and was the last
to contain signed, extensive articles on the major areas of human
knowledge and endeavour. "It is noteworthy for its index which has
justly been described as the best index of any work of reference".
(P&TMOM). Each of the 29 volumes in this complete set measures
approximately 11 1/2" x 9", and each contains perhaps 1,000 pages which,
being printed on onionskin paper, result in a thickness per volume
hardly exceeding one inch. Each is bound in moss green coloured suede
with silk-sewn endpapers of supple (and sensual) calf. All volumes are
stamped in gilt with the title, edition number, and volume designation,
as well as the crest of the University Press at Cambridge. Some volumes are
blemished, the most significant being abrasions to the spine of vol. VI.
The spines of several other volumes are also rubbed, although to a
lesser extent. Some of the coloured paper front free endpapers are
spotted. The stitching of volume I (as might be expected) is a bit
stretched, and the last volume (XXIX) shows a bit more wear. The
contents are clean, bright, and unmarked throughout. Overall, the set is
in extraordinarily good condition, given the delicacy of the binding and
paper, and looks quite magnificent in the tiered mahogany stand (which
is included in the price). The stand itself is a bit nicked and bumped,
but in good condition notwithstanding. Digital photos may be viewed at

Price: $1,100.00.
