outside of France. Original mottled calf, spine with raised bands divided

(POTT, JOSEPH HOLDEN): AN ESSAY ON LANDSCAPE PAINTING: With remarks general
and critical, on the different schools and masters, ancient or modern.
London: printed for J. Johnson by C. Etherington, 1782. HT vi [3] 10-104
Pp., 19 cm. A charming essay written by another young man who had probably
just completed his "grand tour", as Burke had, just before he wrote his
essay. The writer is aware of Burke's treatise and is somewhat affected by
it. He also knows Gilpin's picturesque and is minimally affected by that.
His taste is for the Italian style, as seen as well in the French and Dutch
Italianate artists such as Poussin, Claude and Brill. He does approve of
Ruysdael, particularly for his truth, although not for his "northern"
style. On the other hand he believes that the English landscape has not yet
been done justice with all its variety and richness even though he is much
impressed by Wilson and his Italianate style. In the later part of the book
he has prescriptions for good paintings in great detail including the sorts
of staffage different types of views ought to have. Especially interesting
are his prescriptions for the future of English landscape painting which
sound very much like what Constable, immediately after the publication of
this book, began to do. The book is very scarce, today. ESTC, T94179,
Schlosser-Magnino, P. 773; Not in Cicognara. OCLC and COPAC find a total
of 10 copies. Although many of the most important libraries do have a copy,
there is none at either HRH or Hollis. Original calf boards, spine laid
down. $875.00
