Another fine item from our new internet-only catalogue for the New York Book
Fair which will be posted on our website later today.
ROOSEVELT, Franklin. AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his son
James congratulating him on election to his fraternity at Harvard.
Hyde Park: [October 1927]. A fine one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER,
completely in FDR's hand, to his son James Roosevelt SIGNED as
"Father." In full: "Dear Jimmy-- A nice telegram last night from the
Fly Club congratulates me on your election-- & I am very happy that
my very dear eldest son will soon be in those same four walls where I
was in 1902 -- 3 -- & 4 -- I hope the rest of the fellows you were
working for have been elected too -- Your own admission fee & first
year's dues will be a Christmas present from me. Your devoted
Father." The Fly Club was the fraternity Alpha Delta Phi, for which
Franklin Roosevelt served as librarian during his time at Harvard.
The future President was only an average student who attended classes
fairly regularly, though he did join fellow students in cutting out
of one class by slipping out a window at the rear of the room.
Franklin Roosevelt later compared his Harvard education to an
electric lamp without a cord. He graduated in 1904. After Harvard,
from which he did not graduate, James Roosevelt became an insurance
executive, a position he left in 1937 to become secretary to his
father in the White House. He was decorated for his service as a
Marine in World War II. Brief autograph notation on back of envelope,
possibly in FDR's hand. Autograph letters completely in the hand of
Franklin Roosevelt are quite scarce; those to family members
exceptionally so. Normal creases from folding. Fine with envelope.
