Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7686 ) Freeman, Douglas Southall. R. E. LEE: A BIOGRAPHY (COMPLETE IN
FOUR VOLUMES).
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, (1942 & 1962). Full cloth, Octavos, ca.
2400 pages, Black & white photographs, maps. Near fine.
      This monumental work is still the finest biography of Lee. The
research is superb and the documentation thorough and precise. In the hands
of a less able biographer this amount of detail would overwhelm most
readers, but Freeman makes it all come alive. While Freeman was sympathetic
to Lee, he is certainly not afraid to weigh all the evidence. Well
illustrated with plates and maps, including some fold-outs. This is a mixed
set, with vols. I and II being 1962 reprints in dust jackets, and vols. III
and IV being from the 1942 Pulitzer Prize edition with extra illustrations
at rear and lacking the jackets. Extensive bibliography. See EICHER #262;
CIVIL WAR BOOKS Vol. II, p. 57; DORNBUSCH #2930, etc. $100.00
