PARK, William, Jr. /THE GAME OF GOLF/. Bound in original illustrated 
olive green cloth showing golf bag with clubs. Illustrated with 
black-and-white photographs. Longmans, Green and Co., London and New 
York. 1896. Square 8vo, pp. xii, 277. Boards bumped and rubbed at edges, 
with scuffing to design and spine. Hinges a trifle weak, but not split. 
Contents clean, with a trifle of age-toning to margins.  A good plus copy.

First published in 1896, this is the third printing (described as "Third 
Edition" on the title page), with a printing year of 1896. See Donovan 
and Murdoch, "The Game of Golf and The Printed Word 1566-1985", #3690 
(which also has a b&w illustration of the front board of this book). 
Park was a professional golfer (champion 1887-1889), who identified the 
need for a "book of instruction", written by a professional to assist 
amateurs in developing the skills necessary to enjoy and compete in the 
game. Divided into twelve chapters, with such headings as "The Game of 
Golf", "Golf Clubs and Balls", "Style of Play", "The Long Game", 
"Approaching", "Putting", "Play Out of Hazards", "General Remarks on the 
Game", "Competitions and Handicapping", "Laying Out and Keeping Golf 
Links", "The Laws of Golf", and a concluding chapter. 1960 ink 
inscription on half-title page; small former owner's name and address 
label on top left of front pastedown - now partially removed. Contents 
clean and tight, with several pages uncut.
