MERTON,  Thomas.  THE CHRISTMAS SERMONS OF BL. GUERRIC  OF  IGNY.
(Louisville,  KY): (Abbey of Gethsemani) (1959). First Edition.  Bound
in  cloth-backed  decorated boards; ii, 62 pages. Includes  a  25-page
essay  by  Merton,  the  remaining pages consisting  of  four  sermons
translated  by Sister Rose of Lima. This copy is INSCRIBED and  SIGNED
on  the front endpaper by Merton as Father Louis "with all blessings/&
good  wishes/Fthr  Louis."  Merton has added a small cross  above  the
inscription.  Above  the  cross  is the  ownership  signature  of  the
Christian  author  Richard  Martin  Pope  who  has  also  added  below
Merton's  inscription: "(Thomas Merton)/Abbey of Gethsemani, Trappist,
Ky./February  8,  1960."  Pope  wrote   a  book  about  the  Lexington
Theological  Seminary  in Kentucky that was published in 1973.  Housed
in  a  felt-lined  cloth  slipcase.  In the near  future  we  will  be
cataloging  a  small archive of Merton material that includes  letters
and  an original photograph from his ordination owned by Daniel Walsh,
Merton's  teacher  and  friend who first suggested to Merton  that  he
journey  to the Trappist monastery in Kentucky to make a retreat. Near
