[Together with Five Other Plays]/. Bound in original full leather.
Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, London. 1804 and 1805. 8vo. Blank
preliminary pages removed. The boards are now very bumped and worn. The
joints are tight, but the hinges are cracked. Contents foxed, but
otherwise unmarked.
This volume contains six plays, bound together in one book. All were
published by Longman et al in 1805. Tobin's "The Honey Moon" (pp. 82) is
"a new edition", although the first appearance of this play was in 1805.
"The School of Reform; or, How to Rule a Husband", by Thomas Morton (pp.
88) is a 1st edition. "To Marry, or Not to Marry: A Comedy, in Five
Acts", by Mrs. Inchbald (pp. 86) is a 1st edition. "Who Wants a
Guinea?", by George Coleman the Younger (pp. 84) is a "new edition".
"The Blind Bargain: or, Hear it Out", by Frederick Reynolds (pp. 76) is
a 1st edition. "The Soldier's Daughter: A Comedy, in Five Acts", by A.
Cherry (pp.
84) is a 5th edition, printed for Richard Phillips, London, 1804. All of
these plays were performed at the Theatre Royal (Covent Garden or Drury
Lane). Tobin (1770-1804) was a dramatist who wrote three plays, all
published posthumously. Morton (1764-1838) was a dramatist and a lawyer,
wrote many comedies, and was an honorary member of the Garrick Club.
Mrs. (Elizabeth) Inchbald (1753-1821) was a novelist, dramatist and
actress whose romantic plays were often reprinted. Colman (1762-1836 -
whose name is incorrectly spelled, here) was the son of a dramatist, and
wrote, or adapted, some 25 pieces (including "John Bull"). He was the
manager of the Haymarket Theatre. Reynolds (1764-1841) was a dramatist
who created nearly 100 tragedies and comedies. A. (Andrew) Cherry
(1762-1812) was an actor and dramatist, who joined an Irish strolling
company and later wrote some ten dramatic pieces, the best known being
that presented in this volume.
