REVIEW OF THE CASE OF THE FREE BRIDGE, BETWEEN BOSTON AND CHARLESTOWN; in
which the Expediency and Constitutionality of that measure are considered;
with a statement of the Legislative proceedings upon it at the late January
session. Including Public Documents.
Boston; Dutton & Wentworth: 1827.
The third attempt to erect a free bridge across the Charles River between
Boston and Charlestown a short distance from an existing toll bridge (which
was the problem). The Governor and Senate were convinced that building such
a free bridge would abridge the property rights of the owners of the toll
bridge, and also prejudice the stake the state had in the question. The
House was in favor of the free bridge and over-rode the Governor's veto,
but the veto was upheld by the Senate. Apparently a free bridge was finally
built a year later. OCLC locates 15 copies. Self-wrappers; 6"x9", 106
pages; moderate wear and soil; some browning; several spots and a period
inked name on cover, with another name inked out; very small hole in cover
extends to page 3. [06824] $100.00
