copper engraved title page. Text with 15 full-page plates. Cont. limp vellum, 
somewhat soiled. From the library of Arthur Annesley Anglesey (1614-1686), 
with his signature dated Sept. 23, 1666 and note of what he paid for the book (2 
shillings, 6 pence) at top margin of title.     $4,500.00 (trade discount

The text celebrates the accomplishments of Pope Sixtus V, particularly his 
architectural and urbanistic projects (some 35) begun and realized during his 
short reign as Pope (1585-1590). The plates depict the restored column of 
Trajan, the movement of the Vatican Egyptian Obelisk, as well as raising the 
obelisks of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Lateran Obelisk and the Obelisk of Santa Maria 
del Popolo, as well as other events in the life of the Pope. Adams B2480;
