(INCUNABULA) Poggius Florentinus. HISTORIA FLORENTINA [Translated into
Italian by Jacobus Poggius]. (Venice: Jacobus Rubeus. March 8, 1476). First edition.
Folio (11-3/4” x 8-1/4”). 116 leaves (including the rare final blank). Roman
type. Forty-one lines, capital spaces (some with guide letters). Full 18th
cent. diced burgundy Russia, cover with gilt fillet borders and inner gilt
panels tied by foliate corner pieces, spine compartments with gilt elephant devices
and gilt lettering, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Some
drying to spine with upper and lower front joint cracked but still strong.
Chemised and housed in 1/4 brown morocco slipcase. Occasional early ink marginalia,
final blank has some crude early scrawling. Title (a1) and text with
scattered oxidation or foxing. Armorial bookplate of Robert Walsingham Martin. An
excellent copy of one of the great early humanist histories of Florence.
