NIMMO, Joseph, Jr., Chief of the Bureau of Statistics, Treasury
Department. /REPORT ON THE INTERNAL COMMERCE OF THE UNITED STATES
Submitted May 6, 1885 / Commerce and Navigation/. Bound in original
blind-ruled black cloth with gilt titling, and five large colored
folding maps. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC. 1885. 1st
edition, heavy 8vo, pp. 562. Corners of bds. rounded. Some light
scuffing & a few spots to bds. Hinges & joints tight. Internally very
clean. Very good condition.
Adams, in "/The Rampaging Herd/" / A Bibliography of Books and Pamphlets
on Men and Events in the Cattle Industry, at p. 267 (#1674) describes
this title as "rare", and calls it "..among the most important of the
'big four' cattle books. [Its] contents were compiled by experts on the
subject." The third part of the book contains extensive statistical and
economic material on cattle ranching. This is followed by 71 Appendices
(many authored by experts in the field) about the conditions then
existing in the range and ranch cattle business of various areas of the
United States. See also Howes, /U.S.IANA/, p. 419, who calls it "the
unrivalled source for the period." The five large folding maps show: (1)
the range and ranch cattle area of the U.S., (2) the distribution of
annual rainfall in the U.S., (3) the distribution of the spring and
summer rainfall in the U.S., (4) hypsometric sketch of the United
States, (5) transportation lines of the States and Territories of the
Pacific Coast. Map (1) has a three inch closed tear near hinge. Now
neatly repaired with archival tape. All maps appear to have been seldom
opened, and are in excellent condition.
Price: $1,750.00.
