ELEMENTS OF CHESS. Boston: W. Pelham 1805. First
Edition. Contemporary calf, rebacked. Folding frontispiece
of chess board. The second book published in America on
chess and the first by an American. To Americanize the game,
the author suggested renaming the pieces: Governor for King;
Captain for Knight; Pioneer for Pawn. This copy trimmed but
still with satisfactory margins. Recently and nicely
rebacked retaining original label which has a large chip.
Wear to corners. Large armorial bookplate without a name on
front pastedown with smaller bookplates of A. R. Pendleton
and Avis & D. L. Vaughan above it. Mild foxing. Attractive
copy of an increasingly scarce book. $1500.00
