(No. 7634 )  Wallace, Lew[is]. (1827-1905). BEN-HUR: A TALE OF THE CHRIST.
New York: Harper & Brothers, (1880). First edition, Full cloth, Duodecimo,
552 pages + 12 page ad section. Very good.
      Wallace was a Civil War general, sat on the court-martial which tried
Lincoln's murder conspirators, and was the territorial governor of New
Mexico. He was also a best-selling novelist and this is most popular work.
Early state of the first edition, with six word dedication in two lines: "To
/ the wife of my youth," typographical error on page 11:37, and 12 pages of
publisher ads for other books bound in at rear but with no date on title
page. Tasteful period bookplate of one Samuel Doughty on front pastedown.
Bound in original brown textured cloth over bevelled boards with
gilt-stamped spine titles and brown endpapers. Shallow bumps to corner tips
with slight fraying, shallow chips to spine ends. Upper joint has beginnings
of a 1/2" split at head of spine, front endpaper is split along inner margin
but hinge is not broken. Mr. Doughty has stamped his name on recto of
preliminary blank leaf. A few signatures protrude perhaps 1/16" further from
the textblock than others, but none loose. Handsome copy of this classic.
