FLAGG, James Montgomery. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS).
Fine undated [@1939] 4-page letter of @700 words in Flagg's
hand to Bill [Willis Birchman: author, illustrator, and
friend of Flagg's]. Begins by saying he saw no point in
autographing a photo and how he could not get a date to
attend a ball with him so he went solo. "Had my photo
snapped with Fiorello [LaGuardia, New York mayor] and Tex
O'Rourke." Describes the drinking and foolishness at the
party, including his own, and mentions that Gelett Burgess
stated that Flagg should have been master of ceremonies
because he could make everyone behave the way he did at the
Dutch Treat Club. Much more descriptive detail about the
party and the people there. SIGNED "Monty," as he often did
when writing to Birchman. Flagg, the epitome of the bohemian
artist (certainly this letter gives a good taste of that),
was a master of portrait studies and incisive caricatures.
He created many posters for the government and is best known
for his famous "I Want You" Uncle Sam recruiting poster, an
American icon. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators
Hall of Fame in 1980. Normal creases from folding. Fine
