      Chambers, a well known author and publisher in his day, published this
controversial work anonymously in 1844. His name did not appear on the book
until the 12th edition in 1884, long after his death. The present work
brought the phrenological doctrine of natural laws and the progress of
nature to a popular audience, and Darwin would later acknowledge that
"Vestiges" paved the way for his "Origin of the Species" which appeared five
years after this edition. Chambers' sequel, also in this volume, consists of
further explanations of theory of "development" in nature, including a
section on the zoology of the Galapagos Islands, among other things. Also
included at the end of the text are two letters from William Henry Weekes
(1790-1850) describing some of his electrical experiments on plants and
such. Fascinating and important little book. Bound in original brown cloth
over boards with blind-stamped boards and gilt-stamped spine title. Small
chips at head of spine, very short tear to top edge of lower joint, mild
browning to text. Binding sound, hinges not cracked, but lacking front free
endpaper. But for that, an unusually well preserved copy.    $150.00
