HOWE, Julia Ward. PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED. Oval image 4" x 6"
on an 8" x 10" sheet of paper with the printed statement
"Copyright 1902 by J. E. Purdy, Boston" on the bottom and
the photographer's embossed stamp in the corner. Signed by
Purdy in pencil at the lower corner of the image which is of
an elderly Howe glancing to the side. SIGNED in ink "Julia
Ward Howe/February, 1904" below the photograph. Howe, active
in the women's suffrage movement, is perhaps best known as
the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," written at
night in a dark tent near the beleaguered capital of
Washington at the beginning of the Civil War. It earned her
the grand total of $4 upon its publication in THE ATLANTIC
MONTHLY along with the added bonus of instant and lasting
fame. Later she became president of the New England Woman
Suffrage Association as well as the Association of the
Advancement of Women. Howe was honored as the first woman
elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1908,
two years before her death at 91. Signed photographs of Howe
are excessively rare with no example recorded selling at
auction for at least the last 30 years and no other example
to our knowledge offered privately. Lovely image in an older,
decorative frame. $7500.00
