Masclet, Daniel. LA BEAUTE DE LA FEMME. Album du Premier Salon
International du nu Photographique Paris, 1933.
Paris; Daniel Masclet: 1933.
Daniel Masclet (1892-1969) was one of the most important figures in French
photography of the 20th century, both as a photographer and as a critic and
theorist. Masclet began his professional career as a celebrated cellist but
after winning a gold medal for some of his photographs in the Revue
Française de Photographie, he switched to photography and with the help of
his wife, the model Francesca, became a leading portrait photographer and
also experimented with still-lifes and urban landscapes. As a leading
critic he wrote several books on photography as well as numerous journal
articles, and was curator for the first retrospectives of the work of
Berenice Abbott and Edward Weston. This important exhibition of female
nudes is a prime example of his work as critic and promoter in the 1930s,
and includes the work of Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, Maurice Beck, Drtikol, Jean
Moral, Bruno Schultz, and many more. A new biography of Masclet was
published in France in 2001, and there was a retrospective exhibition
devoted to his life and work recently at the Musee Nicephore Niepce.
