Erasmus, Desiderius. FAMILIARIUM COLLOQUIORUM… ab Autore Postremum
Dilige[n]ter Recognitu[m], Emendatum & Locupletatem. Cum Indice. Basel: H. Froben [and
Nicolaum Episcopium]. 1537. 8vo. 768,(64)pp. With the final blank. Printer’s
device on title. Bound in cont. blind tooled calf, each cover with a central
brass ornament and 4 brass bosses (for a total of 10 brass pieces on the covers).
With the 2 fore-edge clasps (brass catches & clasps). Rebacked at an early
date. This copy owned by the great 19th century archaeologist Heinrich
Schliemann with his signature on a preliminary blank and on the title-page.
$3,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
The first edition of the COLLOQUIA of Erasmus appeared in 1518, but it went
through many revisions and expansions during the author’s lifetime. Apparently
the Froben edition of 1533 is the last to be augmented by Erasmus, making our
uncommon 1537 edition an early reprint of the complete (final) text. Not in BL
German STC or Adams. VD 16 #E2382. CATALOGUE OF THE ERASMUS COLLECTION IN THE
CITY LIBRARY OF ROTTERDAM, p. 46.
