One of our many fine new arrivals for January, all of which can be viewed on our
website: http://www.erols.com/agvent
DARROW, Clarence [POWYS, John Cowper]. FARMINGTON. New
York: B. W. Huebsch 1919. Third Edition. INSCRIBED and
SIGNED by the author on the front free endpaper "To my
brilliant friend/John Cowper Powys/With the regards
of/Clarence Darrow/New York City/Feby 24 1920." Darrow
likely met Powys through Charles Erskine Wood. Darrow
introduced suffragette Sara Bard Field to Wood, the Indian
fighter, attorney, poet, and anarchist, and despite a thirty-
year difference in age, the two married. Powys met Sara and
Erskine Wood when he went to California in 1921 and became
Colonel Wood's protege. Powys, a descendent of the poets
Donne and Cowper, wrote many books of both fiction and
nonfiction. George Steiner has described him as the only
English novelist to rival Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Lacking
the dustwrapper. Spine dull; a number of small white paint
splashes to the front cover. Despite the soiling to the
cover, a Very Good copy. $2000.00
